Japanese Anime And Its Growth In Western Society
By PD12

Japanese anime, the concept, is many years old. itself developed from the Japanese version of comics, today known as manga. The first manga was created in the 19th Century, by a Japanese guy named Hokusai. From Hokusai's original 'blueprint' of manga, so developed the manga that we see today.

Storylines of manga were based in fantasy. The stories were often based on mythical creatures, space ships, monsters and other such fantasy settings. This mindset was uncommon in America until the arrival of Japanese manga in the early 1990's. From this moment onwards, the industry began to grow exponentially.

The 1990's / 2000's saw a vast increasing in demand for manga across the western world. Around 1993, the japanime industry in America had a net worth of mere thousands, however 10 years later, the industry went from being worth mere thousands, to being valued at over 100 million US dollars.

Spawned from anime, such shows as VR Troopers and Power Ranger showed similar ideas to the ones found in classic animated programming - often involving fantasy stories about superheros, evil villains, and monsters. At this point these shows, Power Rangers particularly, were hugely successful, they aired nicely in Canada, America, Japan, and Europe.

Sure, these shows were not in the traditional sense, but clearly the link between ideas in these shows, and those found in of the traditional sense. The makers of Power Rangers (Bandai) put an American twist on an already successful way of producing high quality content, then reaped the profits.

Since then however we've seen classic anime, i.e. actually animated, creep very quickly into western society. Dragon Ball for example, and other names like Hamtaro, Gundam, are almost household names in Canada and America. Likewise for Europe and Britain.

With new technology being developed, coupled with better animations software and powerful hardware, we should

expect to see another explosion in the wealth acruing power of the industry in the near future.
